Eco-Friendly Gardening Tips

Gardening is a great time to be close to nature and for quiet thinking. Here’s some ideas to take care of your garden naturally:

• To get rid of Weeds- Take wet newspaper and layer is on the weeds. Overlap it and then add mulch. Paper is better than plastic because it is biodegradable.

• Keep Mosquitoes away- Keep a dryer sheet in your pocket but if you’re allergic to the stuff in the dryer sheet, avoid contact with your skin.

• Keep Squirrels away- Sprinkle cayenne pepper around plants and bulbs

• Slugs and Snails- Crushed egg shells or copper wire in the garden work to keep the slugs out.

What's On The Bedside Table?

Simply In Season
(Recipes that celebrate fresh local foods in the spirit of More-with-Less)
by Mary Beth Lind and Cahtleen Hockman-Wert

From the creators of More-with Less, and Extending the Table, comes a new World Community Cookbook that provides recipes and reasons to eat seasonal foods grown locally. Eating in season is a great way to improve health, support local farmers, and help the environment.

The book gives 6 reasons to eat Simply and in Season:
1. Freshness
2. Taste
3. Nutrition
4. Variety
5. Environment
6. Local Health.
Of course each of these reasons is elaborated on.

I liked many things about this cookbook. It’s colorful. It’s easy to read. It has simple color coded recipe sections for spring, summer, autumn, and winter, plus an added ‘year round’ section. Each Seasonal section is further broken down into Breads and Breakfast, Soups, Salads, Sides, Main Dishes, Desserts, and Extras. Each season features local foods that are fresh during that season, so you don’t have to guess which foods in your store are ‘in season’ at that time. I also like that there are little poems, menu suggestions, and conversational tid-bits. Whether you’re an experienced cook, or a novice, these recipes are easy, tasteful, healthy, unique, and satisfying.

Simply In Season (Recipes that celebrate fresh local foods in the spirit of More-with-Less) by Mary Beth Lind and Cahtleen Hockman-Wert is what’s on the bedside table.

Euge Groove "Sunday Morning" (Shanachie)

The music on this new CD from saxophonist Euge Groove makes me feel like I’m taking, at least, THREE trips thru the all-you-can-eat buffet line at my favorite Sunday Brunch hangout. This is one of E.G.’s smoothest and most melodic efforts since his early Warner Brothers releases (circa 2001-2002). A large reason for the overall smoothness and song-quality is that every track on “Sunday Morning” was co-produced by “Mister Finesse”—Paul Brown, who also plays lead guitar on several tracks.

The CD opens up with “Get Ready”. Relax and enjoy—it’s a quiet ballad (a rarity for EG). This is NOT a remake of the Temptations (or Rare Earth) song. But it is, most likely, the best tune on this CD.

Sounding a lot like the well-known track “Born To Groove”, “Say My Name” is brimming with similar energy. Meanwhile, “Yes” is a quiet Urban vocal (courtesy Dax Reynosa) that you may (or may not) like. Of course, E.G.’s current chart hit, “Sunday Morning”, is also featured on this CD. Check out the sophisticated track “Tenderly” (featuring Euge playing a tenor sax) for a stylish soft-Urban touch.

This is Euge Groove’s debut release on the Shanachie label.

The tag line on the back of this effort reads ”Euge’s most soulful CD yet – warm and inspiring as a Sunday Morning!” I can’t disagree.

Craig Chaquico "Follow The Sun" (Shanachie)

After a rather long hiatus, the Ashland resident has put a lot of work into this new ten-song set, a blend of Smooth Jazz, New Age and American Indian influences.

The CD includes “Lights Out San Francisco”, featuring Peter White on Spanish guitar. The instrumental version of this song was actually a hit Smooth Jazz focus track on its own back in the mid 1990’s. Newly revamped, the tune now features a straightforward vocal track by newcomer Rolf Hartley.

Check out the Carlos Santana style riffs on the tune, “Azores Lisboa”.

To make you feel good all over, nothing will do it better than the very unusual, “Circus Beach”; a wacky, off-the-wall confection written by Chaquico, as were nine of the CD’s ten songs. And what about the tenth tune?

Probably the best track on this album was written by Kenny G. “Songbird”, Kenny’s “signature song”, is done up in a melodic, reserved style, showcasing Chaquico’s proficiency on the acoustic guitar.
